What are rehydrate bags and should you drink them in a heat wave?

It is important for our health every day, especially in very hot weather or intensive movement when there is a lot of sweating. Recently, rehydration products in the form of bags or tablets have increased and claim to be more useful than water, but how true is that?

The NHS recommends that adults should drink between six and eight glasses of water per day, which corresponds to 1.5 l to 2 l, while children should drink between 1 l to 1.7 l depending on the old, how old. If we sweat a lot, we not only lose liquids, we also lose electrolytes, essential minerals that maintain a good physical function. Sweating is the type of body to cool off, but it is extremely necessary to replenish these liquids.

Rehydration products contain electrolytes and some also glucose. They are helpful to fill essential minerals in people who may have lost many of them by excessive sweating or illness and diarrhea.

Dr. Deborah Lee from Dr. Fox Online Pharmacy says Yahoo UK, however, that “for most people, rehydration products are not necessary for most people”.

However, it adds that there are some specific situations in which rehydration products should definitely be taken into account. This includes:

  • People who show signs of severe dehydration or heat creation in a heat wave or hot weather

  • People with severe vomiting and diarrhea

  • Athletes who do longer training sessions

Symptoms of severe dehydration include a dry mouth, an intense thirst, sunken eyes, low blood pressure, fast pulse, dizziness and weakness as well as poor or low urine output.

The symptoms of heat creation or thermal slaughter include headache and dizziness, tiredness, low blood pressure, faster impulse, moist skin, nausea and/or vomiting and confusion.

This includes:

  • Older adults who may be less inclined to drink and are more likely to have other chronic medical problems such as kidney diseases

  • Babies and small children

  • People with chronic diseases such as heart, lung or kidney problems

  • Those with mobility problems

  • Anyone who sweats extensively

Apart from these specific groups and the situations listed above, most people don’t have to drink rehydration products every day, and in fact it is not advisable to do this, says Dr. Lee.

According to Dr. Lee is the drinking of appropriate amounts of water, especially in hot weather, the most important thing you should pay attention to.

It is also not advisable to take rehydration products if you have medication for heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, and you should first obtain advice from your family doctor or pharmacist.

If you take rehydration products, Dr. Lee to carefully follow the instructions. For example, according to the brand, you should only take five dioralyt bags per day, while Liquid IV recommends that you don’t drink more than one bag in 500 ml of water per day.

“Taking unnecessary rehydration bags can have harmful consequences and is a waste of money,” adds Dr. Lee added.

Although it is unlikely for most people to consume too many rehydrate bags or tablets, it is still possible and can lead to excess electrolytes that harm your body.

“Too many electrolytes can cause hypercalemia (high sodium) and hypercalemia (high potassium), both of which have serious consequences and be fatal,” warns Dr. Lee.

In addition, some rehydration products also contain glucose and should be taken with caution by everyone with diabetes.

There is also the risk of an allergic reaction to a rehydration product.
