Tinder plunges a new with facial recognition scans with facial recognition to check profiles and increase security.
New users in California are now being commissioned to make a video selfie during the onboarding process of the app, which Tinder will compare with the other photos of the user to check whether their profile is real.
The app also checks the scan against faces that are used on other accounts and provides verified profiles with a special badge.
According to Axios, Tinder will save a non -reversible, encrypted face card to identify duplications that reported on the new function.
“We see this as part of a number of identity security options that are available to users,” Yoel Roth, head of trust and security at Tinder parent company group, told The Outlet. “Face Check … should really be about confirming that this person is a real, living person and no offer or a fake account.”
The function is already used in Colombia and Canada, and California will be the first US pilot market.
The stored facial data will be deleted as soon as a user has deleted its profile, Tinder claims.
Computer and app users have long tried to use fraudulent identities in public profiles for purposes that range from financial “romantic fraud” to outgoing, detailed attempts to pretend to be someone else, a practice that is known as “cat fishing”.
US Ministry of Justice and FBI officials told CBS News In 2024 there were more than 64,000 romantic fraud in the USA last year.
