The exercises you should do according to your personality type

Do you ever feel that you just can’t find the right training? One that you enjoy and who want to stay in the long term? If that sounds familiar, it may not be the right activity for your personality type.

Scientists have found that personality traits can have an impact on whether we enjoy certain types of movement.

Finding an exercise that you actually like to do can play a major role in the search for motivation and lead a healthier and more active lifestyle.

The study published in Psychology in Frontiers included a small pool of 132 volunteers with a number of fitness levels and backgrounds. Half received an eight -week fitness plan on a domestic basis and the other half continued its usual lifestyle.

The personality traits used in the study were categorized according to the Big Five, a widespread scientific model that helps the explanation of variations of human personality and temperament.

The categories of personality traits are:

  • Extra version measures energy and social interactivity

  • conscientiousness measures self -control, diligence and attention to detail

  • accordancealso called compatibilityMeasures friendliness, helpfulness and willingness to cooperate

  • Neuroticism measures depression, irritability and mood

  • openness measures creativity, curiosity and willingness to maintain new ideas

Most characteristics had a certain influence on the type of exercises the participants enjoyed, with the exception of the agreement. Scientists found no connection between adequacy and physical activity or sedentary behaviors.

Team sports and group fitness are suitable for extroverters who have a higher intensity sessions and are together with other people. (Getty Images)

This group lives from the competition and therefore group activities and highly intensive sessions are ideal.

If you tend to an extrovert personality type, you would rather enjoy:

  • Group fitness courses such as high interval training (HIIT), Zumba and Spin

  • Team sports such as volleyball and football

  • Social fitness companies such as hiking with friends and runclubs

Scientists say that people who score strongly for conscientiousness are only for the advantages they offer for their health than because they enjoy it.

In this sense, exercises where you can pursue your progress and results could be the most rewarding if you identify with this personality traits. You can include:

  • Run and use fitness equipment such as a smartwatch to track distance and speed

  • HIIT or Spin workouts that use a heart rate tracker like Myzone to measure heart rate zones

  • Strength training exercises with which you can recognize progress through the ability to lift heavier weights and recognize physical changes

People who strongly achieve this special feature may be less likely to focus on physical activity, “due to a higher connection with the perceived stress and stronger focus on failure,” said the authors of the study.

This means that group activities and sport are not ideal for this personality type, since they can make comparisons, anxiety and negative self -talk.

Participants in the study, which were highly valued for neuroticism, reported that they enjoyed “easy training units in which they were not observed, or meetings that do not require lengthy, persistent, strong effort”.

The most suitable exercises for this personality type could include:

  • At home Matten-Yoga or Pilates courses with trainers who provide online video tutorials

  • Home -Fitness meetings with Peloton bike or treadmill that offer online courses

  • Personal training sessions with a trustworthy fitness trainer to provide instructions and proper advice

Earlier studies have shown that openness is usually not associated with enjoying or exercising movement. And scientists in this study found that those who scored a high goal for the characteristic reported that they did not enjoy any activities with higher intensity.

They found that openness “was associated with a greater body awareness”, which means that people could “have a stronger tendency to concentrate on their feelings” and to perceive a high degree of effort as threatening.

It could mean that people who identify with this personal characteristic are better suited for mindful exercises, such as:

  • Yoga and Pilates, whether in a group class or at home

  • Strength training in which you work closely with a trainer to follow progress and changes in your body

  • Walking or running outdoors in nature, as this can achieve a meditative effect
