Only space! The ten most crowded closures in London and the rest of England unveiled

If you are a regular commuter on 7:30 a.m. Thameslink service from Bedford, you have our sympathy – your train is officially overcrowded in the country.

On the 21-minute journey between St. Albans and St. Pancras, the train is 184% full-what means that there are almost twice as many passengers on board as seats.

It is one of three Thameslink services in the top 10 most overcrowded train routes in England and Wales – a list that is dominated by morning and evening prices in and outside the capital.

The Thameslink service, which leaves 15 minutes earlier, is in second place, with 179% of the crowds – from 17:46 from Euston to Crewe, which is operated by West Midlands Trains/ London Northwestern Railway.

The only service in the top 10, which does not serve the capital, is the 07:54 Leamington Spa to the Birmingham Snow Hill Zug.

Thameslink says that his walk -in trains, which run at peak times with 12 carriages, “are equipped with large areas for a comfortable position between short station stops”.

The government was selected by the government to move as many people as possible.

However, since the service from 07:30 Bedford to Three Bridges is a “quick” service – missing stops such as West Hampstead – the gaps between the stations can exceed 20 minutes.

This means that standing space cannot be included in the calculations of how overcrowded the train is – and so that it is officially the “most loaded” service in England and Wales.

In comparison, the 37:48 Bedford -to Brighton service has a similar effort on the 07:30 Bedford -to Three Bridges Service, but the inclusion of constant capacity in the crowding calculation leads to a “maximum load factor” of 67%, which is not regarded as an excess capacity.

A Thameslink spokesman said: “We constantly monitor the promotion of our services and take measures there to offer our passengers the best possible service.

“These huge 12 -cariage trains, almost a quarter kilometers long and with space of up to 1,620 people who sitting and standing, were actually only 67% full of space in London -in the worst case.

“The problem is that this survey does not reflect the fact that Thameslink trains, in contrast to other British carriages, were built by the DFT as people with less and a lot of standing room.

“The bumper was only left out of the calculations because the train lasted longer than the 20-minute threshold between its last stop and London.”

The annual figures for overcrowding in large cities were published on Thursday by the Ministry of Transport.

The statistics are based on the accusations of the passengers, which were held in England and Wales between September and December last year and evening.

The survey showed that London was the city with the highest number of daily passenger information on a typical day in 2024 – an average of 1,207,600.

This was an increase of 6% compared to the previous year and ten times more than the next higher cities: Birmingham (117,700), Reading (102,900) and Manchester (95,300).

The frequency numbers were based on the number of passengers per train before their destination, not on the entire trip.

The stations in which overcrowding was greatest included Vauxhall, Elephant and Castle and Harrow-on-the-Hill.

The Liverpool Street was appointed London station with the highest average number of daily passenger information – an average of 273,600.

However, the true number will be far higher, since the calculation excludes the passengers that arrive in the east, since these passengers are classified as abandoned by the London City Center.

Paddington was the London station with the largest percentage increase in daily passenger information compared to the previous year by 10%, from 122,300 to 134,200 daily passenger information.

More than a quarter of the railway passengers stood when their train arrived London last autumn.
