Neolithic farmers’ halls discovered older than Stonehenge under the school

An early neolithic wooden hall was found under a school in Scotland. Archaeologists believed that it could have been a ceremonial venue for Scottish agricultural communities.

The remains of the “internationally important” hall, older than Stonehenge, were found under the two school soccer fields for the Carnoustie High School in Angus.

The website, which was first examined in 2017, is examined by the guard archaeology. It is believed that it is the largest hall in Scotland.

The archaeological group said that the discovery of the hall and a smaller accompanying building was “exceptional” and included artifacts from all over Scotland, including Arran and the Highlands as well as hazelnut shells and charred grain grains.

Among the artifacts discovered was a gold-decorated Celtic spearhead and a sword as well as an extremely well-preserved wood and leather sheath in the late Bronze Age. It is believed that it is one of those preserved in the UK.

A report by Guardarcheology indicated that the halls probably pulled farmers from a wide area for festivals and celebrations. It was particularly rare to have two buildings together.

Alan Hunter Blair, who headed the field work, said: “Carnoustie excavation provided extraordinary results, the traces of the greatest early neolithic wooden halls, which were ever discovered in Scotland, from almost 4,000 BC.

“This was a permanent structure of 35 m long and 9 m wide, built from oaks with opposite doors near an end of the building. His large roof was carried by paired massive wooden posts.”

Beverley Ballin Smith, the co-author of the report, said: “This monumental wooden sake, which is completely strange to the culture and landscape of the previous Mesolithic era, was built by one of the first groups of farmers to colonize Scotland in a delete within the remains of the natural forest.

“It was completely shaped, architecturally demanding, large, complex and necessary skills in terms of design, planning, execution and carpentry.”

The archaeology group said that the smaller hall was 20 meters long and more than eight meters wide.

Ballin Smith said: “The carnoustie -halls increased and prominent in the landscape were probably near routes, in which people could of course have gathered in different seasons.

“The availability of hazelnuts in autumn is a strong indicator that this season is important for meeting, beating and celebrating.

“Carnoustie could have been a focus [the halls’] Meaning big enough to attract people from a much wider area.

“Some artifacts came from distant places and represent deliberate deposits, such as fragments by Arran Pitchstone, an ax from garnet albums and a piece of smoky quartz from the highlands.

“Other materials have been found more local, such as Ach, Quartz and Chalcedony.”

Kathryn Lindsay, the managing director of Angus Council, said: “When [we] Approved the development of two outdoor football fields in Balmaachie Road, nobody imagined that the process would show one of the most internationally most important archaeological discoveries in Scotland. “

The Council financed the archaeological work, which was required as a condition for planning the planning.
