More than 1.4 m and claim mental services

A record of 531 people a day received social benefits for mental health problems, and the analysis of the PIP numbers (PIP figures for personal independence payments) shows.

In the 2024-25 financial year, the employees of the Department of Work and Pensions approved 193,890 such cases for England and Wales and corresponds to an application that was stamped with rubber every three minutes.

The full extent of those who claim PIP due to diseases of mental health could actually be much higher, since the government data does not contain those who successfully appeal to an initial rejection of their claim.

The recent statistics for April also show that a total of 1.4 million people had received a PIP payment due to mental health problems. This number corresponds to an increase of 70 percent compared to a similar monthly snapshot in January 2020, when 848,882 such payments were approved.

This data in April comprised 407,000 cases that were approved for “mixed anxiety and depression”, 62,000 for “anxiety disorders” and 83,000 for ADHD as well as a variety of other diseases that range from autism to personality disorders.

In the meantime, one of ten of the 38 million population of the country is given a kind of health benefit. In November 2024, 3,943,677 people between the ages of 16 and 64 claimed a payment for disability or illness.

The Richard Tice MP from Reform UK said: “The degree of waste and corruption in this country is on an all-time high with a complete lack of surveillance, massive expenses and without an accountability of this Labor government.

“This country has to be managed more like a company and less like a charity with unlimited funds. It is always the hard -working British taxpayer that pays the price.

“Reforms will reduce government spending by scraping Net Zero, ending the practices and securing our limits. This will release us to concentrate on what is really important: improving public services and facilitating the burden on the working class.”

Helen Whatly, the secretary for shadow work and pensions, said: “This week, the prime minister of socialist Labor MPs was forced to get well -being.

“Except welfare expenditure must be brought under control, but we now remain incredible that the taxpayer will cost more.

“Strong is in office, but not in power. Without someone who can make difficult decisions, this country is doomed to fail.”

The analysis takes place only a few days after Labor -Backbencher Rachel Reeves was forced to reset its plans to reduce the performance account.

The Chancellor had hoped to impose stricter criteria for disabilities to fill a black hole in the government’s expenditure forecasts.

But on Thursday, she was forced to calm down in a U -turn of £ 3 billion in order to calm a member of the rebel. As part of the deal, the restriction will only influence new applicants, while those who already have the advantage that they continue to receive them. The move has increased the prospect of tax increases in the autumn budget.

There was speculation that the fiasco, which surrounds the reversal and its financial effects, possibly contributed to the tears of Ms. Reeves in the lower house on Wednesday.

The analysis of the state data shows that the number of PIP cases for mental health problems has increased considerably faster since January 2020 than with other symptoms. Overall, the PIP claims have increased by 55 percent, while those who cite mental health rose by 70 percent.

Last year, the government spent £ 26 for the advantage, including around £ 3.5 billion for anxiety, ADHD and depression. According to the Department of Labor and Pensions, the total costs will probably accept £ 35 billion by 2029-30.

The telegraph analysis showed that around 8.5 percent of the population of work in the employable age are either on PIP or in its immediate predecessor, the life of the disabled (DLA). This rose from 4.4 percent in 2002.

As soon as other disability services are included, such as B. Presence permission or employment and support allowance, this increases to 10.3 percent of the population of an employable age in any form of illness or disability support.

The increase in benefits in disabilities that young adults are awarded is particularly worrying. Around 5.8 percent of people between the ages of 16 and 30 now claim either PIP or DLA, of only 1.7 percent in 2002. More than one of 25 young adults (4.4 percent) claim mental health.

The large spectrum of PIP payments, including darker, has also triggered concern. In April alone, a total of 10 withdrawals for the “Munchhausen syndrome”, 67 for food intolerance, 16 for “age” and almost 17,000 for alcohol and drug abuse were awarded.

In 2024-25, an average of 2,656 new registrations for PIP in England and Wales were made every day, with around 1,262 of these claims being approved.

Of these, an average of 531 a day for psychiatric disorders, 341 for bone and joint problems and 121 for neurological disorders.
