In a breathtaking display, Astronauts recently conquered a flash storm on board the International Space Station (ISS) that illuminates the sky over Singapore. The image that was taken over Southeast Asia during the orbit of the station shows intensive light outbursts that flicker in the region through the cloud cover.
What is that?
The ISS is located in a low earth orbit and offers a unique viewpoint for the observation of large weather phenomena, events such as forest fires, volcanoes, snowfall and much more.
When the ISS went over the city state of Singapore at 3:18 a.m. on June 15th, the crew experienced an electrifying storm with flashing over the landscape. According to NASA, the flash, which appears almost spherical in the picture, is due to lightning to the clouds over the urban area.
Where is it?
The ISS circled 417 kilometers above the South China Sea when this picture was recorded.

Why is it incredible?
The observation of lightning from space offers important data for atmospheric scientists. Singapore and the surrounding areas have many storm activities and make hotspots for studying tropical weather patterns.
While weather satellites circle the earth and studying similar patterns and phenomena, there are more data with which they are useful with a number of eyes, including human, on and around the planets, with which more data can be useful for the development and forecast frameworks.
