“I got angry”: Mary Earps injured by reaction to her English retirement

Mary Earps said that the support of her English teammates meant “the absolute world” for me after she felt “evil” through the broader response to the announcement of her international retirement in May.

The goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain, who played an important role in the English European Championship triumph in 2022, and her progress for the World Cup final a year later criticized it because she had made a call for her international future less than six weeks before the Lionesses defense opening. However, Earps insisted that it was a “very tough decision” that had long since occurred.

“It was difficult and it was painful,” said Earps, who earned 53 hats for her country. “Some people were incredible and the girls, as they had my back … that meant the absolute world for me. These are girls with whom I grew up and have so many amazing memories. It was sad, but I think it’s the right thing.

“I think that I had a villain in a way, it was probably a bit difficult to see things and read things, but it’s more that my friends and family see. I’m upset because I am like: ‘You don’t choose. You have to deal with it now.’ That is difficult.

Earps spoke with the broadcaster Fearne Cotton in her happy Place Podcast whether it is difficult for her to watch the lionesses this summer. “I don’t want it to be painful to watch her, but I will not know until it is there because I almost felt a bit relief because it had come for so long,” said the 32-year-old former Manchester United player and retired.

“The girls are above all a phenomenal team. I think they will really do it very well, so I’m really looking forward to seeing that.

“Mental, physically I thought:” Right, I gave everything here. “Maybe other people have not experienced it as I experienced it. [that was because] We have held these conversations behind closed doors. “
