Harrods plans to install the first curved escalators of Britain as part of an ambitious new renovation of the Knightsbridge department store.

The luxury dealer, who brought the first escalator to Great Britain in 1898, plans to introduce the technology in his underground floors to keep his attraction in the middle of the growing competition from Dubai, Paris and Milan.

While some curved escalators are installed in Asia and the USA, they have never been built in Great Britain. Mitsubishi is the only provider in the world.

When Harrods introduced the first escalator to Britain, which was made from woven leather, customers received a glass of Brandy to “overcome the new sensation”. It is not clear whether a similar tonic is offered to the first users of the curved sponsors.

Harrods, in the planning of documents, said that “it intends to bring this innovation in Great Britain”, so that “the comprehensive stair huts of the history of Harrods” are created a “great and luxurious retail experience”. It hopes to create an “impressive feeling of arrival” that imitates its original Edwardian sales rooms.

Under his proposal, corrugated marble columns are bent over the heads of the customers, inspired by the draped fabric of Lady Britannia on the Brompton Road facade of the business. The current ceiling is replaced by a replica of the 1920s after asbestos have been removed that were identified during the surveys.

In addition to the curved escalator, every brand based in the Harrods’ basement would also receive their own eight to ten-person buoyancy for privacy and security, which contributes to the fact that customers feel comfortable.

The new technology is part of an overhaul with several million pounds, in which Harrods will deepen the flagship of the lower floor and sub-bass of its flagship from the 19th century in order to create a hall with two heights and to merge its fine watches and fine jewelry departments.

Harrods, who belongs to the Qatar Investment Authority, said in planning documents to revise their shop to “remain relevant in an increasingly competitive luxury market” and to set London on the menu for hard luxury goods.

The bosses warned that London would lose against Dubai, Paris and New York if the renovation did not go on. It comes when Great Britain suffers an exodus of the rich after the government abolished the non-omit status.

Luxury chiefs have also warned that the British “tourist tax” also harms the attraction in London under wealthy buyers. Before it was scrapped in 2021, the system enabled buyers to regain 20 percent of VAT for purchases. More than 300 managing directors, including Sir Rocco Forte and designer Anya Hindmarch and Sir Paul Smith, demanded that it were brought back before the budget of last year.
