Great Britain has officially brought the most powerful supercomputer iambard-Ai online and signals an important acceleration of the ambitious drive of the government to strengthen artificial intelligence research nationwide.

Technology secretary Peter Kyle activated the Iambard AI machine in Bristol on Thursday. The ministers claim that this step will significantly support the United Kingdom in the development of new medical remedies and innovative instruments to reduce emissions.

The government committed £ 1 billion to expand the Great Britain capacity by 2030. This includes the establishment of a series of AI growth zones in order to accelerate the planning permits for new data centers. Such a zone will take place in Scotland, where Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed that £ 750 million will be financed in Edinburgh, with another planned for Wales.

In addition to an existing supercomputer in Cambridge, Isambard-Ai should process in a single second “what the entire global population would take 80 to achieve,” said state statements. It is expected that companies and scientists use these systems to process the extensive data that is necessary for the training and structure of AI models, which facilitates new drug discoveries and breakthroughs in climate change technology. Researchers from the University of Liverpool are already using the machine to analyze tens of millions of chemical combinations to find methods for decarbonizing the British industry.

These initiatives are part of the new computer roadmap, a strategy that aims to reduce the dependence on foreign processing power and to change the public computing capacity of the United Kingdom. By 2030, the government expects this capacity to reach 420 AI Exaflop – an equivalent from one billion people who spend 13,316 years to achieve what the system can do in one second.

In order to support these plans, a diverse group of researchers, academics and technology leaders was called to develop an AI -Science strategy that is intended for publication in autumn. This group includes Google Deepmind Vice President Pushmeet Kohli, Vice President Alison Noble and chair of the engineering system and physical research council, Charlotte Deane.
