Food observer examines Amazon for late payment to suppliers

The British food monitor has enforced an investigation to treat suppliers through Amazon.

The food code lawyer (GCA) announced whether the online single-trade giant based in the United States violates payments against payments.

The supervisory authority said this in particular would examine delays in the payment of their suppliers, deductions in commercial negotiations with suppliers and the management of the supplier concerns regarding these deductions.

It comes almost a year after the GCA Amazon announced that it has to take “fast and comprehensive measures” to improve compliance with the industry rules for the protection of suppliers.

The GCA monitors the 14 largest food dealers in Great Britain – including Tesco, Sainsbury and Marks & Spencer – to ensure that they treat suppliers fairly.

It limits companies to make changes to delivery contracts at short notice, and retailers must also make a reasonable notice period if they no longer want to use a supplier, and reasons for the termination of the contract.

Rules also prohibit late delays in payments from retailers to their suppliers.

The juror Mark White said: “Delays in payment can significantly damage suppliers.

“The alleged delays could expose Amazon suppliers to an excessive risk and unexpected costs, which may affect their ability to invest and innovation.

“I decided to start this targeted investigation based on the scope of evidence that I have seen from several sources.”

He asked suppliers and provided evidence of their experiences with Amazon.

The GCA added that she received information about “other problems with Amazon”, but did not provide any further details about it.

An Amazon spokesman said: “Amazon takes the food supply code of the practice incredibly seriously and we will work fully with the Jurimer while he is doing his investigation.

“Although we are disappointed with this decision, we welcome the opportunity to further prove our continuous compliance with this specific section of the code.

“We have already made considerable improvements in our experience in the grocery supplier, including the payment practices, with supplier contacts for this decline in the decline compared to the previous year.

“We will continue to listen and work with our food suppliers if we make further changes.”
