In Episode 170 this week in space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik by Dr. Robert O’Brien, director of the Center for Space Nuclear Research at the University Space Research Association, accompanied to discuss the Spacecraft of Radioisotope Thermoelectric (RTGS).
The electricity supply area, especially in the dark, cold outer solar system, is a major challenge. There are limits how large solar collectors can be, and they are not very efficient in the weak sunlight beyond Mars.
For decades, NASA missions of selected flagship missions have been using RTGS -radioisotopes thermoelectric generators -to meet this need. From the experiments on the Apollo missions to the Wikinger -Mars -Lander, Galileo to Jupiter, Cassini to Saturn and the twin voyagers, RTGs have made it available for space research for decades. From Plutonium to Americium, core elements offer years of heat that can be converted into electricity.
O’Brien has specialized in RTGs for decades. It is a fascinating dive with atomic batteries!
