In Episode 169 this week in space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik will look back on the Mariner 4 Mars Mission 60 years later by Rob Manning, the emeritus of JPL.
Six decades ago this week, the Mariner 4-probe raced past Mars, the first to be successful in this Brei company at the time. The technology was incredibly primitive and yet effective and sent 22 video frames of the red planet back with low resolution. On this day, in the early morning hours of July 15th at JPL in Pasadena, Mars died of the romantic. What was a bit colder for a long time, a little drier, had only one trace of an atmosphere and looked out of the moon dry and struck by craters.
