Emma Raducanu continued her good shape when she booked a place in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal with a win against Peyton Stearns in Montreal.

The world number 33 proved to be too strong for the American 32nd Seed, a few breaks in every sentence that won a 6-2 6-4 victory.

Raducanu, who arrived at the WTA 1000 event from an impressive semi-finals at the Citi Open last week, had won her two earlier meetings with Stearns, and an early break made control of the first sentence.

She broke out again in a long eighth game to seal the set, but remembered in the middle of the second when double mistakes crept into her game.

The British number one broke up 4: 4. A final break led to a run of four consecutive games to win a place in the last 32.

Raducanu said in quotations that are broadcast on Sky Sports: “I know that Peyton is a really hard opponent. We played twice in the past and have always played really long games. I am very satisfied with how I got through this game.

“I somehow lost a focus in the second set in some moments and she used it, but very happy that I got through a top opponent and was happy to extend my stay in Montreal.

“I would only like to thank you (to supporters), I saw the Union Jack in coupling moments and I was actually born in Canada, so it means that it is so much good here and is very happy to be in the next round.”

Raducanu will compete in the third round against the finalist of the finalist of Wimbledon or the Lulu sun of New Zealand.
