NWA 16788, the largest piece of Mars on earth, will bring up to 4 million US dollars in New York City during the auction on July 16 on July 16. Mars pieces on earth are rare. According to the auction house, only 400 of the more than 77,000 officially recognized meteorites come on earth – or about 0.6% – from Mars. The meteorite corresponds to approximately 6.5% of all currently known Mars materials on Earth.

The NWA 16788 drove 140 million miles through the room before it crashed in the Sahara desert, where, according to Sotheby’s, it was found in Niger’s Remote Agadez region in 2023.
“The chances that this is astronomical from there,” said Cassandra Hatton, deputy chairman of science and natural history of Sotheby, in an auction house video.
The meteorite weighs a little more than 54 pounds, which makes him the largest meteorite of Mars, but not the largest meteorite that has ever been found. According to Nasa, a meteorite that originally weighs over 100 tons fell to Namibia.
It is believed that NWA 16788 is a “relative newcomer here on earth after he recently fallen out of space,” said Sotheby’s in his auction list. The meteorite is public in the New York galleries of Sotheby until July 15th.
“This is not only a wonderful find, but also a massive data record that can help us unlock the secrets of our neighbor, the red planet,” said Hatton in the auction house video.
