English bulldogs should not appear on new banknotes, since they are “inherently uncomfortable” in Frankendog, as a charity organization for animal rights claimed.
People for the ethical treatment of animals (PETA) addressed the Bank of England after they have initiated a consultation in plans to redesign a part of the country’s currency in order to request publicity to submit proposals.
In a letter to the bank, Yvonne Taylor, Petas Vice President of corporate projects: “The British are known for their love for dogs, but our participation in the selective breeding of this ‘Frankendogs’ is a national shame.
“British bulldogs were deliberately bred as ‘breeding breed’ in order to have extremely flattened snouts and tiny heads that have a strong influence on their health.
“These unhappy animals cannot pull enough air into their narrowed nostrils and often have to breathe through their mouths to sniff, snor to snor and snap for air. This disease can sometimes be fatal.”
Ms. Taylor added: “Bulldogs and other breeding in nature are uncomfortable, are frequent visitors to the veterinarian and have an even greater risk of physical deterioration, neglect, abandonment and even death during the cost crisis, if their legal guardians cannot afford to speak further by their mutations.”
The bulldog has long been seen as an emblem of Great Britain and its culture, with art, postcards and cartoons as well as a mascot in the army and the marine.
However, the breed suffers from a number of health states that are associated with an extreme breeding because of its trademark, its short snout and its broad skull.
A study by the Royal Veterinary College showed that Bulldogs were more likely to be faced with health problems as other breeds.
The bank has invited the public to share its views about what should take over the latest iteration of banknotes over six potential topics.
A portrait of King Charles is also recorded in all designs.
However, the consultation, which closes on July 31, was criticized.
Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, the former Brexit Minister, has accused the Central Bank of undermining the country’s currency.
He told the Telegraph: “The whole idea of a redesign is stupid.
“Fiat currencies depend on the trust that is undermined by silly or cheap designs. This is bad for the bank’s credibility. The reform of the Bank of England is becoming increasingly important.”
A bank spokesman said: “The consultation asks the public what broad topics – and not certain images – would like to design the next row of banknotes.
“These answers will help to inform the next steps. Your views will ensure that the final banknote designs reflect the values with which people in Great Britain use. We have determined criteria that every successful topic should not contain any images that are adequately insulting or excluding all groups.
“Note new designs do not undermine the currency. New designs enable us to increase the strength of the security features and maintain trust in banknotes.”
