If you have ever entered a hotel room after a long trip and were immediately checked with the air conditioning systems, we feel them.
Regardless of whether you are abroad or stay up to date during a British heat wave, the Hotel -Air Con settings seem to confuse even the experienced travelers.
Too hot? Turn it down. Too cold? Suck it up again. Suddenly they throw and turn their tremors or cook at 2 a.m.
So what is the right temperature to set your Hotel Air con?
We spoke to Philip Musgrave, director at Airtech UK, to get the facts.
Why the hotel air conditioning system confuses people
Theoretically, Hotel Air Con systems should not be distinguished in any environment by Air Cons. But it happens, we go in and start quickly to twist buttons in this way, and that … and you know the rest: after the nervous call to the reception to say that the room is a sauna.
According to Musgrave, this is because many hotels still use outdated technology, so that we may not immediately record the settings.
“Many hotels have old systems, and the controllers are like the old heating controllers, which are only a rotary button and they do not know where they are,” he explains Yahoo UK.
“So a lot of people will go in and turn it and get too cold. Then turn the button and they are too hot.” And this is the mistake: “People make extreme movements and not gradual movements of the controller.”
He explains that modern air consequences determine and maintain a certain room temperature. In older rooms, however, their only options can be test and error (or the panicked call).
So what is the ideal temperature?
If you are looking for a consistent sleep without waking up or sweating, aim at:
Daily setting: “The comfort zone that you are striving for for air conditioning is about 20 to 22 degrees, which is neither hot nor cold,” says Musgrave.
If you like it colder, he says: “It is personal preference, but the area between 18 and 22 ° C is what you strive for.”
Sleeping sweet spot: We need a slightly lower temperature at night, since our core body temperature drops naturally to trigger and maintain sleep. A cooler space supports this process and makes it easier to fall and sleep.
According to Sleep Charity, the ideal sleep temperature is 16-18 ° C, but Musgrave says that some people prefer 18-20 ° C depending on the level of comfort and sleeping conditions such as a slight or heavier bed cover.

What about babies and young children?
If you travel with the little trips, the Air Con use is even more important to get right.
After the Lullaby Trust, the ideal room temperature for a baby is between 16 ° C and 20 ° C, to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Overheating is a well -known risk factor. So put your baby in a light bed linen or a light, well-fitting baby sleeping bag that corresponds to the temperature of the room.
Should you leave the air conditioning overnight?
As long as you cannot find it to dry, you can, as long as it is set to a consistent temperature.
Musgrave explains that modern systems encompass a built -in delay to prevent temperature fluctuations: “If you adjust it to 20, you can climb 21.5 before it comes back to 20. This is on purpose. If you do not have what you call as a dead band, it can turn from heating to cooling, which is uncomfortable.”
So resist the urge to grasp the dial. “When you get up at night to change the air design, do something wrong.”
Tips for using Hotel Air Con in the right way
Here you can find out how you can avoid the “too hot, too cold” trap:
-
Select your setting – and leave it in peace: Somewhere between 18 and 22 ° C, depending on its preference.
-
be patient: It can take up to an hour to cool a room when it is extremely hot (approx. 30–33 ° C), says Musgrave.
-
Skip extreme adjustments: “People transform it into full heating because they are cold … but that doesn’t warm up faster. If it is set to 21, it will arrive there, just give it time.”
-
It is not necessary to open windows: “Hotels have fresh air systems … The myth of opening the window is not really applicable because fresh air comes in via the back of the climate system unit.”
