It would only be the third time that we discovered an “interstellar object” of this kind.
However, the researchers still check whether the object is really a visitor from a different star system.
At the moment, the object was temporarily given the name A11Pl3z, and the astronomers are pursuing telescopes around the world to understand what it is and where it could.
The first confirmed interstellar visitor was ÜBMUAMUA, which was first discovered in 2017. It has turned out to be mysterious: characteristics, including its strange, extended form, even led to speculation that it could be an extraterrestrial spaceship.
The second known object was 2i/Borisov, which was found in 2019.
Scientists believe that many other such objects come by regularly past the earth, with some of them fly relatively close to us every year. But many of them are undiscovered because they are difficult to recognize and it is difficult to know where they come from.
Scientists hope to finally learn more about them and even to use them as a kind of evidence for distant star systems and planets.
They also hope to find more of them in the coming years, thanks to new and more powerful telescopes such as the recently switched on Vera C Rubin Observatory.
