Capri without the crowd, Italy

Procida in the Bay of Naples is not as famous as near Capri and Ischia, but all the more attractive. Not a tourist trap, but an island on which people actually live, it is a delightful piece of unlike Italian life. The island is small enough to be explored on foot or by bike, even though there is also a bus service. There are many pretty little beaches for swimming, sunbathing and picnic – our favorite was Il Postino, in which scenes from the film of the same name were made. Since people are still fishing for a living, there are no lack of wonderfully fresh seafood in the restaurants. A local delicacy is lemon salad that is made from the huge, thick -skinned lemons that are unique in Procida. Villa Caterina B & BS Obstgarten for lemon and orange trees offers fresh juice and jam for breakfast, and the rooms have a wonderful view of the island and the bay, with Vesuvius in the distance and Naples away only 45 minutes away with a ferry.

Sea fruits and sunshine in Sweden

If life becomes too much, I dream of Styrsö in the Gothenburg archipelago. Large open sky, natural paths and piles of swimming places make this car-free island a perfect summer escape. It is rounded off by a brilliant restaurant on the coast, tånglable, where you have a plate of fresh seafood and a cold glass of wine and have the sea away.

Rest under the dunes, Germany

I was 21 years old and lived in Germany for a year to improve my language skills and decided to visit the tiny East Frisian island of Spiekeroog from a mood (yes, it was the fantastic name that pulled me to the place for the first time). I spent a few happy nights in the Hotel Islandriede, a small family -run hotel that is only 10 minutes away from the ferry from the mainland. The island is car -free and a beautifully peaceful place to explore the dunes or simply sit with a coffee and watch the sea.

A Balearic beauty

Sa Dragonera is a tiny, but extremely beautiful uninhabited island, which is located southwest of Mallorca in the Balearics. It is full of history (there are 18th century watchtowers to observe pirate activity). The island is supposedly after the lizards that inhabit it, an extremely popular place of hiking and bird observation and only accessible from the nearby Sant Elm by small ferries. It is best to surpass the heat and pedestrian traffic – you will not regret it if you see the prospects from above.

A tiny Greek island with great beaches

Everyone knows that Greece has some of the most beautiful Mediterranean islands. But only a few foreign tourists heard from Kythira and so the locals like it. For most of the year, only about 3,500 people live on the island. In summer, however, thousands of Greeks come back to houses that have been in their family for generations. There are no big tourist resorts – it is a Greek island that is rich in history and tradition, with dozens of beautiful beaches.

Explore the Old World Ireland in Galway Bay

Insheer (or Inis Oírr), one of the three spectacular Aran Islands in Galway Bay, is far my favorite island. The Rossaveel ferry on the mainland lasts almost an hour, but they feel like they have been returned to the past – this is a tiny island of stone walls, fishing boats, old huts and more ponies and falls than cars. You can walk or drive over the island in one afternoon to explore ship wrecks and old ruins. Enjoy traditional music in the charming pub at the end of the day. You can almost camp on the beach at a good price.

Peace (and sheep) in the middle of Helsinki

Kuusiluoto is a jewel in the heart of Helsinki, which can only be reached on foot via rickety wooden discoverers who feel as if they were going on water. When you enter the island, meet an inviting committee for friendly sheep. The only indication that you are in a lively European capital are the skyscrapers on the water. To get to Kuuiluoto, start the city’s technology museum (worth a visit yourself and only a short bus trip from the city center from the city center) and walk a few miles along well -marked paths through reed beds. The island has a sauna, a forest path, free postcards and the most valuable properties – rest.

Snorkel in the bays Silba, Croatia

I didn’t know much about Silba before I got an arrival is a small, car-free island without hotels, only family-run guest houses. The Zadar catamaran takes about 90 minutes, with several sails per day in summer. Once there, you can walk through olive groves on shaded paths, find calm pebbles with clear water for swimming and rise the toreta tower at sunset for a great view of the Adriatic. My tip: Bring a snorkel with you, stay at least two nights and make sure that you book your fermentation in advance because the schedules are limited.

Breathtaking views in Scotland’s Hebrids

On the community ownership Isle of Eigg, the constantly changing light is so exciting that you don’t have to do anything else during your stay, but say “Look!” And have beautiful variations of rainbow, sunburst or cloud formations. Spend the night at Laig Beach Bothy and look out of the beautiful large windows in the sky, by the sea and on the mountains. As Virginia Woolf wrote: “You shouldn’t always let this gigantic cinema play in an empty house.”

Profit tip: France’s wild west

The island of Ouessant (USHANT) is the westernmost point of the cities of France. It is a short ride on the ferry from the mainland and as wild as possible. Visit a day as part of a longer vacation or stay on the island for your entire trip. You can rent bicycles as soon as you get off the ferry. There are beautiful beaches like plague du Prat; Impressive lighthouses; and bars and restaurants in the main village of Lampaul.
