The British seafarers convinced the Royal Navy to get a computer room for the latest aircraft carrier for eSports and video games

  • The HMS Prince of Wales, a British Royal Navy aircraft carrier, has a computer game suite.

  • Requested by seafarers, it is equipped with alienware -gaming computers and a broad -screen TV.

  • The place can be tight on the warship of 1,600 CREEN, but you have received approval for the establishment of the room in February.

Decks under F-35B Lightning II fighters and wildcat attack helicopters, Chief Petty Officer Martin Miller, stops over the first seafaring room of the Royal Navy.

It is of course not his main job. Miller is one of two logistics chairs on board the HMS Prince of Wales, the second aircraft carrier in Great Britain.

Business Insiders took a look at the ship when it turned into the Indo-Pacific in Singapore during an eight-month mission.

Miller, the deputy chairman of the Royal Navy’s eSports committee, voluntarily manages the scope set up in February.

After Miller has completed a typical day at 8 p.m., he spends a few hours in the suite, enjoys a robust air conditioning system and plays the strategy game “Sid Meiers civilization VI”.

“Other ships have playstations and Xboxes on the measuring deck so that they can play where they live, but this is the first ship that has a PC setup,” said Miller.

Officially referred to as the “eSports suite” of the ship, it is more of a computer laboratory for the time being. The facility is an old examination room with LED lights, broad -screen TVs, office chairs and eight strong alienware -Gaming computers.

The Internet’s Internet is usually only good enough to support simple text messages so that sailors with local multiplayer games such as “Halo” and “Team Fortress 2.” get by.

The Suite gaming equipment is sponsored by the Royal Navy, which calls on the funds of troops that apply for official support in a sport. In order to get money, sports committees have to prove that their pastime has a large followers inside and outside the British armed forces.

In March 2024, the British Ministry of Defense recognized eSports as military sports and said that it estimated digital skills in connection with games and hoped that activity would help keep young talents.

“If you are a top player or a coder, your country needs you,” said British Defense Minister John Healey in a speech in September.

The ministry announced BI that it started this year a recruitment plan to “fast players in cyber defense roles”, and that the suite on the airline was approved to “improve the experience of their seafarers and promote social connections”.

One of the crew’s sales points for the carrier’s gaming suite is that it can be a tool for cross-rank team bonding. Measurement halls are sometimes equipped with consoles for couch gaming title such as “Mario Kart”, but free access to these rooms is bound to the office.

Miller said officers and managers book the Gaming Suite about three times a week by e -mail for their teams. Sailors also use it at sea every evening, he said.

Aircraft carriers and amphibious storm ships with hundreds or thousands of troops on board often have a number of leisure facilities.

The Prince of Wales, commissioned in 2019, will be equipped with ice pools, saunas, inflatable swimming pools, a golf simulator, three gyms and karaoke.

But with 1,600 crew, relay staff and Marines on board, the space on the 72,000-ton ship can be a luxury. Two computers from the suite are not used because they do not fit into the room and Miller said that the committee has an almost impossible ambition to install an F1 driving simulator.

Joshua Hill, the treasurer of the Royal Navy’s eSports committee, said Bi that its members set up Gaming suites like this in the British naval bases.

Warships are another story, and a room for the construction of a gaming suite on an airline was an encouraging sign of the support of the Royal Navy, said Hill.

“A large part of our infrastructure in the navy is used. The attempt to find the space you can give up is that we are currently struggling with,” said Hill. He does not work on the airline, but is a deputy logistics officer of the HMS Dauntless, an accompanying destroyer.

Hill hopes that this suite can serve as an example of how computer multiplayer games can be introduced in other British warships.

“The next step is, can we get connectivity?” he said. “This is the goal for things on ships as a whole.”
