French scientists discover new blood groups in Guadeloupe woman

French scientists discovered a new blood group in a woman from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the French blood supply agency said on Friday.

The woman is the only known wearer of a new blood group, which is known as “Gwada negative”, the French blood said establishment (EFS). The discovery was preserved 15 years after researching researchers received a blood sample from a patient who carried out routine tests before surgery.

“The EFS has just discovered the world’s 48th blood group system!” The agency said in a statement by the LinkedIn social network and added that the discovery was officially recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion in early June.

So far, the scientific association has recognized 47 blood group systems.

Thierry Pyrard, a medical biologist in the EFS involved in the discovery, said AFP that a “very unusual” antibody was found in the patient for the first time in the patient in 2011. However, the resources at this time did not allow any further research, he added.

The scientists were finally able to deal with the secret in 2019 thanks to the “high-throughput DNA sequencing”, which highlighted a genetic mutation, said Pyrard.

The patient, who was 54 years old at the time and lived in Paris, was carried out before the operation, when the unknown antibody was detected, Pyrard said.

This woman “is undoubtedly the only known case in the world,” he said, adding: “She is the only person in the world that is compatible with herself.”

The medical biologist said the woman inherited the blood group from her father and mother, who each had the mutated gene.

The name “Gwada negative”, which refers to the origins of the patient and sounds good in all languages, was popular with the experts, said Pyrard.

The subscription blood group system was first discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. Thanks to the DNA sequencing, the discovery of new blood groups has accelerated in recent years.

Pyrard and colleagues now hope to find other people with the same blood group.

“Discovering new blood groups means offering a better level of care for patients with rare blood types,” said the EFS.
