The Florida laboratory does lightning strikes to test the efficiency of the equipment

According to the centers for disease control and prevention, around 40 million lightning strikes in the United States met every year.

While lightning takes less than a second and is only as thick as a broomstick, it burns hotter than the surface of the sun. Florida is the Blitz capital of the USA, reports the CDC.

“So it is a challenge that we have to do every day,” said Jack Eble, spokesman for Florida Power and Light.

In a laboratory in Florida, the Electric Company creates its own screws.

Behind glass, wrapped into a shock-resistant Faraday cage and wore protective glasses, watched a CBS message pillar, as the operator Wiberto Flores tested how many volts were able to send three generators to a power insolator and still have worked.

“We have just set almost 500,000 volts. Three times the rate of the actual insulation,” said Flores, when he tested how well devices can withstand the screws because they become more common due to climate change.

Florida has recorded more than 2,000 flash injuries in the past 50 years, says the CDC.

“We have seen many things that Mother Nature has provided nature over the course of a century,” said Eble. “All of these things can happen all year round within the hurricane season and outside of the year.”

Youngest lightning strikes

Last week a flash of Jake Roscraz (29) killed a beach in Florida while celebrating his honeymoon.

“The bolt literally came out of the blue sky and beat this person,” said John Gumm, who looked at him from his balcony.

In new YorkA 15-year-old was recently hit and injured by lightning during a thunderstorm in Manhattan. At the beginning of this week, officials said that 20 people were injured when lightning was hit Lake Murray in South Carolina.

“It was very painful, just like a bunch of taser just started on you,” said Tag Billiot, the swam when she was hit.

Safety tips

When you are outside, think of this rule: When Thunder roars, go inside. The storm would have had space for the blue sky or be far away and could still be dangerous.

The National Weather Service reminds people that no space outside is safe during a thunderstorm and “in safe protection at least 30 minutes after they have heard the last thunder”.

If you are inside, the NWS advises you to keep away from equipment “that you can get in touch with electricity directly”. It is also recommended not to be near plumber, windows and doors.
