The previous record was Jordan Pickford’s move from Sunderland to Everton for a reported fee of £ 30 million in 2017.

Trafford held 29 clean sheets last season when the Clarets protected the Premier League for the first time.

During his time in East Lancashire, the 22-year-old shooting stop also received his first effort from the English senior squad.

He wrote on social media: “Burnley … what an incredible club! In the past two years I have filled a great time with experiences that I will never forget, and the lessons that I will always carry with myself. I am so grateful for everything.

“The boys are really unique. Every day brought something to enjoy, from cricket and darts to the traitors and memories that will take a lifetime both on and outside the field.

“Evey of individual employees in every department contributed to the special spirit that we had as a club, and I am lucky enough to have friendships in this building for life.

“To the fans, thanks for the unforgettable moments. Good or bad, they all gave me learning, joy and memories that will stay with me forever.

“And finally for both managers, thanks for the belief that you showed in me that you have allowed me to be myself and help myself to help me in the player and the person I am today. You helped prepare me for the next step.

“I wish the club all the best for the coming season. I will watch and can hardly wait to see them all again.”
