Life could come from space, say scientists

The seeds of life on earth could come from space – and be widespread throughout the rest of the universe, says scientist.

Researchers have found complex organic molecules in a disc around a “protostar” in a big breakthrough. These molecules are seen as the forerunners of the building blocks of life, which become sugar and amino acids, which are then combined to the complex flora and fauna that surrounds us.

Researchers have previously found complex organic molecules in other places. But the new findings fill out a previously mysterious missing link – one that could indicate that life is more common than we recognize.

When the cold protostar becomes a young star surrounded by a pane of dust and gas, it is a violent process that contains intensive radiation and the spinning from gas. The researchers were concerned that the extreme nature of this process could “reset” the chemical compounds available for a star, which means that they had to be formed in the discs that do planets at the same time.

However, the new findings suggest that complex molecules can remain through this process, which means that they are inherited from the following discs.

The results are given in a new study: “A deep search for complex organic molecules in the direction of the Protoplanetar hard disk from V883 Ori”, which was published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
