James Wade holds Gian van Veen to reach the quarter -finals of the match play

James Wade rolled back the years to move within two victories when his World Matchplay Triumph from 2007 was thought of in Blackpool.

Wade delighted the amount of winter gardens with a 16:13 quarter-final victory against Gian van Veen after leaving 4: 1 treatise with 4: 1.

After the 42-year-old Englishman won eight successive legs 9: 4, he had to withstand a Van Veen fight before crossing the finish line.

“I thought I had thrown it away,” said Wade to Sky Sports after reaching his 10th matchplay semi-finals.

“He was pretty weak early in the game, I just thought I would pump him now and I couldn’t do it.

“He came back towards the end and it was God’s gift for me (profit), not my ability. That is certain.

“I was disgusted (with the start), but he didn’t make his chances optimal. I’m just so happy now, I hummed.

“I was so nervous, it was terrible. I was tight and anxious and don’t have to be because I can play darts.”

There was a 19-year-old difference between age between the two, with Wade giving his television debut at the 2003 BDO World Cup eight months after the birth of Van Veen.

But it was the experienced calf that began to miss his first 11 darts in doubles in doubles as his total number of missed doubles in 28 legs to beat Joe Cullen and Wessel Nijman-and Van Veen used in the opening mini session.

The machine looked confused in its malfunction on the big stage, but the first break had a power of good.

Wade rattled the next eight legs with its strong value, which put the youth champion under enormous pressure in 2024.

Van Veen recovered from this attack on trading legs, but it was more of the breaking than what was required in his view, and Wade kept him at bay.

The Dutch finally broke to get into two legs with 13-11 and had two darts at Double 16 to be moved within one.

But Van Veen slipped out of the wire and Wade 18 years after the title was recorded as another wonderful black pool memory.

Jonny Clayton will hit Wade in the semifinals on Saturday after a comfortable 16:7 win against Stephen Bunting.

The ferret was quickly out of the traps to 5-0 in the first mini session with 5: 0 to the Haunting with an average of 110 and decorated his rule with a 160 checkout in the third leg.

Welser Clayton never looked back and fought home.

“Stephen didn’t play his best game, but I kept him under pressure and played well,” said Clayton, the finalist of 2023 Matchplay after taking two 11-dart legs.

“I hadn’t expected to be 5-0 in advance, but I knew I had to attack and I am so pleased to get over this finish line.”
