Rory McIlroy could not hide his “admiration” to Scottie Scheffler after the American stormed to victory at the Royal Portrush open championship.

Scheffler is a fourth great championship of his career in his unique way and has now attracted comparisons with Tiger Woods.

And after McIlroy had not found a spark for a late charges on Sunday and ended at -10 as a seventh tie, Scheffler kept his nerve to drive to a four -shot win with -17 and to leave the northern Irish in awe in front of his rival.

“Admiration,” said McIlroy when he was asked to respond to the performance of his Ryder Cup competitor. “I think everything you can do is admire what he does and how he does.

“I think what he’s doing is one thing, but how he does is another. He just goes his business, does nothing excessively extravagant, but he is the best in the game in the game.

“Yes, he has been absolutely unbelievable in the past two to three years. As I said, you can only state your hat and observe in admiration.”

But McIlroy refused to deal with the true effects of Scheffler’s performance and refused to show that it is either motivating or radiant.

“None,” remarked the Masters Champion. “I can only concentrate on myself and try to play the best golf that I can.

“I know that when I do it, I will have my weeks in which I will fight and hopefully win.”

But McIlroy admitted that the Scheffler level is striving for in the coming months.

“None of us could hang with Scottie this week,” concluded McIlroy. “He is an incredible player. He was dominant this week. To be honest, he has been dominant in recent years. He is the bar we are all trying.

“In a historical context, one could argue that there are only two or three players in the history of the game who have been here in the last 24 to 36 months.

“Yes, he is a very worthy winner. He is also a great person, and I think he is also a wonderful ambassador for our game. I am very happy for him and Meredith and his family.”
