Crossbreed Corals from Honduras could help protect the Florida coast

Miami – Sea scientist in Miami hope to restore Florida’s coral reef by taking corals from Honduras and Crossing It.

Warming the sea water had a devastating influence on the coral reefs of the sunshine state. There are efforts to save them Third largest barrier Reef System in the world, including the use of Laboratory corals and the Distance from healthy coralsBut scientists are now trying to have a method of saying that it has never been done before.

There are dozens of rocky coral species along Floridas 350 miles, from Florida Keys to St. Lucie Inlet. According to the law on endangered types of US species, two of them are listed as threatened.

“In the past 50 years we have lost more of these Elkhorn corals and culminated in 2023 when we had this really warm summer,” said Baker. “And so that this population recovered, it was found that we need more diversity from outside the Florida population.”

That is why scientists and conservationists in Honduras, especially in Tela Bay, where Elkhorn Coral “looked at the conditions under which corals have to be survived”, looked off the Caribbean coast.

To exceed the Elkhorns, scientists with Tela Marine, an aquarium and marine research center based in Hondura, carefully corals from the reef in Honduras. Permits were required to transport the coral fragments to the USA

When they arrived in Florida, scientists from the University of Miami and the Florida Aquarium in Tampa worked to create the “Flonduraner” Elkhorn, as Baker called it.

At the beginning of this month, the intersection pecions were first planted in Florida under protective umbrellas to prevent predators.

“And if these corals can live through the next marine heat wave, this is crucial for our coastal protection on the coast of Florida,” said Keri O’Neil, director of coral protection at the Florida Aquarium.

With robust and healthy corals, the coastal communities in Südflorida are better protected from floods, since the reefs help break waves with hurrican temperatures. The planting of the first flond streak is only the beginning of reconstruction, which is required for the reconstruction.

“We have to scale this now and plant hundreds of thousands of baby corals throughout the reef,” said Baker. “And there are ways to do that, but we have to prepare and get started.”
