A diversity day at a secondary school in Warwickshire ended upgrade and apologized after a 12-year-old girl who was wearing a union dress was prevented from giving a speech that she had written about British culture.
The students of the Bilton School in the village of Bilton, Rugby, were invited to take part in the “cultural day”, which devoted themselves to the recognition and celebration of the rich cultural diversity in our school community. Children were encouraged to wear outfits that reflected their nationality or family heritage on the event last Friday.
Courtney Wright, a 7th grade student, attracted a union dress that is similar – although more than – one that was worn by the Spice Girl Geri Halliwell in 1997.
Her father, Stuart Field, said that his daughter was removed from the holiday and was not allowed to give her speech, which should celebrate the British values of fairness and courtesy as well as traditions such as tea, talking about the weather and food of fish and chips.
The school then apologized to Courtney. It said that the burden caused by the incident was deeply and was obliged to “learn from this experience and to ensure that every student is recognized and supported when he proudly expresses his legacy”.
In a post on Facebook, Field wrote last Friday: “On my way to collect my daughter from school.
In an explanation made on behalf of the Stowe Valley Multi Academy Trust on behalf of the school it says: “On Friday, July 11th, an incident occurred during our cultural holiday, which has significantly upset one of our students, her family and members of the wider community.
“We deeply regret the need that caused this and offer our sincere and not reserved excuses. Since then we have spoken directly to the student and your family to listen to your concerns and think about how this could be better treated.
The explanation added: “As a school, we examine our guidelines and strengthen personnel training to ensure that our practices reflect our values for inclusion, respect and understanding for everyone. We commit ourselves to promote an environment in which every student respects, appreciates and involved.”
