Sinner had three championship points in Roland Garros in the fourth set, but they slipped away when Alcaraz forced a decision and won an epic finale.

Sinner had to ask himself regularly since the painful defeat and whether she was still in mind, but the 23-year-old gave a emphatic answer to securing his fourth Grand Slam title at the next opportunity.

“I think that’s the part in which I am the proudest because it was really not easy,” said Sinner.

“I have always tried to be honest with me and also had the self -talk, you know what if, what if I always tried to accept it in a way.

“Things can happen. I think if you lose a Grand Slam final in this way, it is much better than someone kills you, you know that you make two games. Then after you continue, you continue.

“I did a lot of intensity in every exercise because I had the feeling that I could play very well. That’s why I also said to Roland Garros that it was not the time to lay down, no, because another Grand Slam arrives and I did great here.”

Sünder and Alcaraz have shared the last seven Grand slams between them.

Alcaraz had been the dominant force in the head-to-head meetings and won his previous five games against sinners, but the Italian had taken the fine edges from the fine edges in several of these encounters.

Asked about the importance of completing his loss against Alcaraz, Sinner said: “It is certainly important that it is not easy if you lose someone several times.

“But in the past I had the feeling that I was very close. When they see all the matchups, I start [with] Beijing, 7-6 in the third.

“Then Rome was that I had a setpoint in the first set, I couldn’t use it. Then I passed what happened in Paris. But I felt close. I never pushed myself down.”
