Qantas has shown that 5.7 million customers were affected by a massive cyber attack that was carried out by the same hackers that Marks & Spencer aimed at.
The Australian airline announced details of how the incident took place this week. Hackers received access to customer data by endangering one of his call centers in Manila in the Philippines.
According to the FBI, the Hacking group, which is known as scattered spiders, mainly consists of teenagers from Great Britain and the USA and has started to attack the airlines in the past few weeks after successfully violating the industries, telecommunications, finance, games, hospitality and retail.
In an updated declaration to the customers, Qantas said that telephone numbers had been stolen, as well as e -mail addresses, addresses, birth dates, genders and in some cases meals.
The company added that no payment details or passport information was lost, while current evidence indicated that none of the personal data were published by the hackers.
“Our absolute focus since the incident was to understand which data was affected for each of the 5.7 million customers affected, and to share this with them as soon as possible,” said Vanessa Hudson, CEO of Qantas.
“Since the incident, we have taken a number of additional cyber security measures to further protect our customers and continue to check what happened.”
A forensic investigation of the incident is currently underway.
The update of Qantante, four people who were allegedly associated with scattered spiders were arrested in Great Britain.
The three men and a woman were arrested for suspicion of blackmail, money laundering and crimes related to the Computer Abuse Act.
