Luis Enrique shrugs the praise for the PSG season with the Club World Cup final to come

There is only one game in the season in which Paris Saint-Germain finally won the first Champions League in their history to complete a historical heights, and this game is the club world champion final, but Luis Enrique says it wasn’t his best. He is better, he claims when he lost. In addition, said the PSG trainer, Manchester City remains the best team and his team has to face a Chelsea team, which he compared with his own, which is still the perfect campaign and have a manager that he “loves”.

“The Champions League was our first and it was very important: that was our main goal when we came to Paris last year,” said Enrique. “And on Sunday with the last game of the season we have the chance to win another with the Club World Championship. But it is important that we are aware of the difficulty of the game. [Enzo] Maresca is a trainer that I love. I love the way he played with the ball. They have many good individual plans, but they also have a real sense of duty. You are a bit like our team. They are also physically strong. It will be a very even game and a very difficult one.

“Chelsea won the conference league, they took fourth place in the league, they grow a lot. They have great players, technical players and a great trainer that I like because they try to play from depth, always press. They are a very complete team that has produced a sensational season.

“Was it our best season? Maybe, but we have to win to complete it. However, you go a finale and there is a loser and there is also a winner, but that doesn’t mean that the loser did badly. We will give 100% and see what price we receive.

“A team is 11 stars, that’s football,” continued the PSG coach. “We don’t want one, we want 11 or 13, 14, 15 … that’s what we want. We are looking for the real star than the entire team. It is like the fans: there is no star, it is the entire Parc of Princes. I think the way is clear for everyone. We want stars, but in the service of the team.”

It was then handed over to him that the star was and that he was the favorite to win the award of the balloon d’Or coach.

“I don’t believe in individual awards in general and still less for a trainer,” he replied. “The team always stands above the individual and that’s something that we want to broadcast at PSG. Ousmane [Dembélé] is the best for what he has done individually, for the goals and templates, but about the goals and the templates, because his work means that PSG has won all trophies. And that should be the only criterion after a player is rewarded individually. That is my opinion and I am sure that there are others.

“There is nothing star on me. There was no player and there is no coach. I like the work I do. I enjoyed my career as a player and I enjoy it as a coach – especially the hard moments. Then I feel happiest. It is nice when things go well, because in our job you can make a lot of people happy, and I have learned to appreciate how the years have passed.

“But I know how this” show “works: I know that people are good or bad because of their results. The praise comes because they win. The best team in the past decade was Manchester City. They lose 10 games and they all kill. They still have the best coach, they are still the best team. It is incredible.

“I accept that. But I was better than I lost. I have nothing against it. I like to criticize more than being praised. I think I did much more if I didn’t win, and everyone killed me with criticism.
