A man died after having broken safety at an airport in Italy and apparently threw himself into an aircraft engine.
All flights were suspended after the incident at 10.20 a.m. on Tuesday for almost two hours in Milan Bergamo, Italy’s third largest airport.
The man who was assumed that he was a 35-year-old from the area arrived without a ticket at the airport and managed to avoid security and go directly to the asphalt through a security door in the luggage delivery area.
According to reports, he entered the airport terminal after leaving his car.
Two border police officers pursued him, but did not stop him from running on a plane that was preparing for the start.
“I saw a man in front of civil servants,” said a passenger board to another flight from the Italian National Daily, Coriere Della Sera.
“First he jumped against the engine on the right side of the aircraft and then went around and jumped or was sucked on the left into the other engine.
“I couldn’t say whether it was voluntary or not, I couldn’t say whether he was sucked on the plane or threw himself on the plane.”
The Airbus A319, which was operated by Volotea, a Spanish budget airline, began his maneuvers when he prepared for the flight V73511 to Asturias Airport in northwestern Spain.
Ansa, an Italian news agency, reported that the victim was neither a passenger nor an employee of the airport. It added that the man seemed to have taken his own life.
The flight V73511 with 154 passengers and six crew members reported reported “Pushback” to leave the parking lot when the man was moved to the aircraft engine, the airport sources said.
The Airbus A319 is powered by two CFM56-5 or IAE V2500 Turbofan engines, whereby rotors can turn almost 15,000 rotations per minute.
In an explanation of X, Volotea said: “We examine reports on an incident with our flight V73511 BGY-OVD, which occurred on site after the boarding was completed.
“We are aware that a person has suffered serious injuries with the aircraft engine. Further information soon.”
The incident forced a total of nine flights within minutes after the incident occurred, one to Bologna, two to Verona and six to Milan Malpensa.
In the incident, accuses security of security
Prof. Gregory Alegi, an Italian aviation expert, said that, considering the strict security measures at large airports, it was difficult to imagine how the incident had taken place.
“There are some cases known in which people have accidentally started in aircraft engines,” he told the Adnkronos news agency. “But this is the first time that I heard of people who supposedly jump intentionally to be sucked into the engine.”
Pasquale Salvatore, the head of the Bergamo branch of the Italian transport union, raises questions about the safety of passengers at the airport.
“When I see the starting process of other Italian airports, there is almost nothing on foot at Bergamo Airport, and there are many situations in which you move on foot,” said Salvatore.
Ryanair is one of the leading airlines at Bergamo Airport. According to Milano, the flights to Prague, Tirana, Kos, Naples and Porto were among those affected.
In May last year, a person was killed after ending in the course of Jet engine of a KLM passenger aircraft at the Amsterdams Schiphol Airport.
In 2023, a 27-year-old airport employee died after being put in a engine of a Delta passenger plane in San Antonio, Texas.
