Bayern’s Musiala for “long time” with broken fibula

The Bayern Munich playmaker Jamal Musiala is on the side of a “long period” after he had suffered a broken fibula and an ankle injury at the Club World Cup, the German champion said on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Germany national player was injured in a challenge with the goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain Gianluigi Donnarumma when Bavaria lost 2-0 2-0 on Saturday in the quarter-finals in Atlanta.

Coach Vincent Kompany was outraged by the injury, but called it an “accident”. Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer criticized Donnarumma because he was “ruthless”.

Musiala was on a return flight to Munich on Sunday morning and will soon be operated on, said Bayern in an explanation.

“This serious injury and lengthy discharge are a real shock for Jamal and all of us. This hits FC Bayern,” said sports director Max Eberl.

“Everyone knows how important Jamal is for our game and what a central role in our team.

“There is also a great human influence and we all feel for him: Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be outside for a long time. He will need everything he needs.

“We will support him intensively, be at his side and look forward to when he is back on the field.”

According to the German media, Musiala is expected to miss four to five months and return shortly before the end of the year.

“It is a situation in which you don’t have to go in. It is ruthless,” said Neuer after the game. “He accepts the risk of violating his opponent.”
